BORGO TERESIANO

Next to Francis B&B Superior the Borgo Teresiano develops, undoubtedly one of the most elegant and elegant districts of the city. Wanted in the mid-18th century by Maria Teresa Empress of Austria, it is characterized by an exquisitely Austrian architecture and an orthogonal urban layout that makes it modern and orderly.

The Borgo Teresiano was the trade district of Trieste, as evidenced by the Grand Canal that pierces the shores in two. Once it was the essential way for maritime traffic but later it was shortened and limited access to the small boats that still crowd it. The Canal is crossed by two bridges (Ponte Rosso and Ponte Verde, once revolving or opening to allow boats to enter) and a pedestrian walkway, inaugurated in 2013 and named 'Passage James Joyce known as Ponte Curto', due to an alleged channel width measurement error.

Crossing the Ponterosso you will pass a gentleman who walks undisturbed. Don't forget to stop and take a picture with him: it's James Joyce, or rather his statue made by Nino Spagnoli in 2004.

CHURCH OF SANT'ANTONIO NUOVO

The main religious building of the Borgo Teresiano is undoubtedly the Church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo. The building has a façade characterized by a majestic pronaos with six Ionic columns and a large pediment; on the attic there are six carved statues depicting the patron saints of Trieste. This church deserves a visit for its considerable size and for its valuable internal frescoes.

SERBIAN-ORTHODOX CHURCH OF SAN SPIRIDIONE

The neo-Byzantine Serbian-Orthodox church overlooks the Grand Canal and is dedicated to San Spiridione Taumaturgo. Built on the foundations of an Orthodox church used by both the Greek and Serbian communities, following a split between the Greeks and the Serbs, the church was modernized and extended. With a Greek cross plan and five domes above it, it has valuable frescoes and paintings as well as a solid wood iconostasis. You will not fail to notice it given the totally different architecture from that of the buildings that surround it.

CHURCH OF SAN NICOLO 'DEI GRECI

After the aforementioned split of the Orthodox community in the Serbian and Greek communities, a Greek Orthodox church consecrated to St. Nicholas, patron saint of seafarers and shipowners, was built on the banks. With a single-nave plan typical of the basilicas encloses a wooden iconostasis rich in decorations with some very particular and noteworthy silver icons.
